Valleyside School History

The first building constructed in 1915. It housed the first high school in Valley county. Mary Clement was appointed as the first teacher. Her formal schooling had consisted of 300 days.

School began in January of 1877, with four pupils, in part of a little two-roomrd sod house. There was a dirt floor and an old cook stove. Fuel was so scarce that they could not afford to heat the whole room. The blackboard was a rubber coat over a board. The chalk come from the chalk hills. During the summer a new school building ws built. The school was used until 1883.

In 1889 the schoolhouse was moved to a more central location. They held school that term for 6 months with one teacher and 52 pupils enrolled. In 1915 a new two-room school building was constructed. Two teachers were employed, and they opened the first high school in Valley County. It was a two year program. By 1925 most students went on to finish in Ord or North Loup. The Current Brick building was built in 1957. In 1963 the building was again too small and two more classrooms and the basement were added.

Currently there are 8 kids attending Valleyside. There is one teacher and one cook.
