Vinton School History In the early days, ambitious organizers planned towns rather promiscuously. Natural demand had little to do with such enterprises, the idea was to make a demand. Thus the town of Vinton came into existence. In 1876 the town was planned, but little was accomplished for a couple of years. In 1878 Vinton town was founded. The school site was across the road from the Vinton Town Blacksmith. The town had a newspaper, called “The Valley County Courier”. The Vinton Townsite Association was incorporated May 11, 1882. The railroad went through Ord, so there was no demand for another town within seven miles of Ord, and Vinton died. Vinton School was founded in 1879, Hardscrabble in 1884, and Cottonwood in 1887. The latter two consolidated with Vinton in 1961. Brace was founded in 1878, conducted its last class in 1964, and dissolved in 1969, some district students went to Ord and some to Vinton. The Second Vinton School building was built in the 30's and can still be seen as the north-south wing of the present structure. The district transferred $2,400 to the building fund in 1934 and matched it the next year to build this school. |
