The first building
constructed in 1915. It housed the first high school in Valley
county. Mary Clement was appointed as the first teacher. Her formal
schooling had consisted of 300 days.
School began in January of 1877,
with four pupils, in part of a little two-roomrd sod house. There
was a dirt floor and an old cook stove. Fuel was so scarce that
they could not afford to heat the whole room. The blackboard was a
rubber coat over a board. The chalk come from the chalk hills.
During the summer a new school building ws built. The school was
used until 1883.
In 1889 the schoolhouse was moved
to a more central location. They held school that term for 6 months
with one teacher and 52 pupils enrolled. In 1915 a new two-room
school building was constructed. Two teachers were employed, and
they opened the first high school in Valley County. It was a two
year program. By 1925 most students went on to finish in Ord or
North Loup. The Current Brick building was built in 1957. In 1963
the building was again too small and two more classrooms and the
basement were added.
Currently there are 8 kids
attending Valleyside. There is one teacher and one cook.
