NORFOLK- The Ord Chanticleer football team traveled to Norfolk last Friday to play Norfolk Catholic. This was the first ever meeting between the Chanticleers and the Knights. On a beautiful overcast late summer evening, the Chanticleers started slowly again for the second consecutive week. Norfolk Catholic got on the board first. After forcing a Chant punt, the Knights returned the punt 59 yards for a touchdown. The slow start would soon change as Ord took the next possession and drove the length of the field with Zach Smith scoring on a 20 yard run. It was a big quarter for the Chanticleers as they would tack on two more touchdowns before the half. The second score came on a 30 yard touchdown pass from Zach Smith to Quinton Ries. The last score of the first half was on a 5 yard run from Zach Smith. The Chanticleers took the first possession of the second half and marched 80 yards that ended with a 10 yard touchdown run from Tommy Stevens. The rest of the half was a defensive battle and Norfolk Catholic scored a late touchdown in the 4th quarter. Kelen Meyer and Johnathan DeRiso had a couple of key interceptions in the 4th quarter also. The Chanticleer big men dominated in the run game once again. Their size and physicality were big throughout the contest. Zach Smith and Tommy Stevens had great nights on the ground, with Tommy rushing for 126 yards with 1 touchdown on 23 carries and Zach rushing for 133 yards on 20 carries and 2 touchdowns. The defense did their part as well eliminating any big plays and making Norfolk Catholic earn everything. The stingy defense flew around all over the field. The starting unit has only given up 1 touchdown all year so far. The Chanticleers are excited to be at home Friday night to face Broken Bow after being on the road the past couple of weeks.
