Chants Top Mustangs

Ord- The 6-0 Ord Chanticleer football team wasn’t exactly sure who they were going to play to start the week after Twin River cancelled due to ongoing Covid issues. Luckily, Tuesday morning, like an early Christmas present, the Chanticleers picked up a game vs. Sutton the Class C-2 State Runner Up from 2019. This was the type of competition the Chanticleers needed to see in order to keep improving towards the end of the year. The Chanticleers took the opening kickoff and stalled out the first drive punting to the Sutton Mustangs who would get great field position. The Chanticleer defense would hold them on 4 downs. On the second possession after a first down, Zach Smith hit Tommy Stevens on a swing pass and he would take it 65 yard for the touchdown with great blocking from Quinton Ries on the edge. The Mustangs would answer back as the Chanticleers got out of position defensively and would give up their first rushing touchdown of the year. The first quarter concluded with a 7-7 tie. At the beginning of the second quarter the Chanticleers would drive the length of the field and Zach Smith connected with Quinton Ries on a 31-yard touchdown pass. Sutton wouldn't go away when they had another big play vs. the stingy Chanticleer defense that resulted in a 53-yard reception down to the 7 yard line. They would score on the next play with a 7 yard touchdown run. On the next possession, the Chanticleers drove the length of the field down to the 1 yard line. After a few penalties that backed the Chanticleers up to the 22 yard line, Zach Smith connected with Kelen Meyer for a 22-yard fade route to the corner of the endzone. The Chanticleers went into halftime with a 21-14 lead. It was all Chanticleers in the second half as Zach Smith would score on a 15-yard touchdown run and John Deriso scored on a 23-yard pass from Zach Smith. This would put the Chanticleers up 35-14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Then Chanticleers threatened to score a few more times in the 4th quarter but got in their own way with penalties. The Sutton Mustangs tried to take Tommy Stevens away all night and Zach Smith was more than efficient in the passing game throwing 4 touchdowns and running for 1 touchdown. Coach Wells added, “This was a game that we needed to get better. We played a full game against a physical team. We learned where we need to improve. We played against a team that fought the whole game and we had to handle some adversity. Everything about the game was a positive experience for our guys.” The Chanticleers will travel to Centura on Friday night to take on the Centurians.
