Three Girls Qualify for State
The Ord High School cross country teams competed in the C-4 district meet this past Thursday in Minden and qualified three individuals for the state meet. Qualifying for the state meet were seniors Kloe Severance and Delaney Cargill and junior Macy Warner. This will be the third trip to state for Severance and the first trip to state for both Cargill and Warner. “I am really excited and proud of the way our girls competed in this meet”, Coach Derry Trampe commented. “We ran faster than we have all year and in some cases the best times of their career. Overall we had a great day.” In the team race the girls finished in fourth place with 79 points and were one place out of qualifying as a team. “We were close to qualifying as a team but just missed out”, Trampe said. “However, it was not from lack of effort. All of our girls ran so much faster in this meet than they have all year so we did the best we could do.” The three teams earning a berth in the state meet were Minden (1st with 43 points), Aurora (2nd with 48 points), and Grand Island CC (3rd with 60 points). Rounding out the team scoring were: Holdrege (93), Adams Central (101), Gibbon (104), Central City (119), Kearney Catholic (130), St. Paul (149), and Alma-Southern Valley (174).
The Chanticleer boys ran some of their best times of the season as well and still finished 12th in the 12-team field. The Chants scored 212 points in the meet. “I felt like our boys ran well and did as well as we could have in this meet we just need to get stronger and faster”, Coach Trampe said. “We have made a lot of progress this season and hopefully, that will carry over into next year and we will be a team that competes for the top spots in meets. That is what we will work on during the off season.” Aurora (38), St. Paul (43), and Minden (49) grabbed the top three spots and qualified for the state meet. Rounding out the team scoring were: Adams Central (69(, Holdrege (83), Grand Island CC (120), South Central Unified District 5 (129), Kearney Catholic (155), Gibbon (166), Central City (172), and Alma-Southern Valley (175).
Kloe Severance had her highest finish of the season as she placed 2nd in the meet with a season-best time of 20:03. “Kloe looked like the competitor we have seen in the past”, Coach Trampe said. “She ran with a lot of confidence and just ran a great race. She has really run well these past two weeks.” Delaney Cargill finished in 13th place also in a season-best time of 21:17 to earn her trip to state. “Delaney got out really well in this race and put herself in excellent position in the first half of the race”, Trampe stated. “After that point she just kept competing and earned a spot in the state meet. I am really proud of what she has done these past two seasons.” Macy Warner finished in 15th place to grab the last individual qualifying spot in the meet. Warner ran a personal-best time of 21:28 in the meet to punch her ticket to the state meet. “Macy had the race of her life at this meet”, Trampe commented. “She went out with Delaney and rand with her for most of the race and then really ran the last mile of the race as well as I have seen her run all year. It was simply a matter of her wanting to compete in the state meet.” Hannah was the other scoring runner for the Chants as she finished in 50th place in a time of 27:39 over the 5,000-meter course. Her time was almost 3 minutes faster than her best time of the season. “I am really proud of what Hannah was able to do in the race”, Coach Trampe said. “It has been a tough year for her as she has battled through injuries but she gave her best for her teammates today. She is a really tough kid that has some running ability. We just need to keep her healthy next year and see what kind of times she can run.”
Treaven Scheideler was the top finisher for the boys team as he finished 44th in a time of 20:10. “Treaven is another kid that has had to battle shin splints the last three weeks and I am pleased that he is able to finish races”, Coach Trampe said. “It is impressive that he is still able to lead his team even though he is running with a lot of pain. I really respect him for his efforts.” Also scoring for the Chants were Hayden Kluthe (51st in 20:36), Gage Sintek (56th in 20:55), and Braden Bruha (61st in 21:25). All three runners recorded their best times of the season. “All three of these guys had their best time of the year and that is what we wanted from them”, Trampe said. “Hayden has really improved in the last couple of weeks after coming off a hip injury and Gage has steadily improved all season. Braden had a really good day and it was great to see him finish on a high note.” Pushers for the team were Caiden Hill and Crew Nelson. Hill finished 67th in a time of 23:14 while Nelson was 70th in a time of 23:44. “Caiden has really improved in the last three weeks”, Trampe stated. “His work in practice has been really good and it paid off for him as his times kept coming down. I was glad to have him out this year and really pleased with his attitude. Crew had one of his best days as well and he ran a solid race. We need to work on his consistency in both meets and practice and he could be a very good runner for us in the future.”
The girls will compete in the state meet at the Kearney Country Club on Friday, October 23. The Class C girls race will start at approximately 1:30 pm with awards slated for 2:30 pm. Taking precautions for the virus they are spreading out the start times to keep the crowds smaller at the state meet and awards will be given out at the course this year. Fans are asked to wear face coverings while at the meet this Friday.
