Norfolk- The 2023 Chanticleer football team went on the road to Norfolk Catholic. After a couple of stallmates on the opening drives for both teams the Chants marched down the field and scored on 47 yd touchdown run from Dylan Hurlburt. Norfolk Catholic took the kickoff and scored on a 99 yd kick return for a score to tie the game at 7-7. The Chanticleers were forced to punt on the next possession and the Norfolk Catholic special teams struck again returning the punt 74yd for a touchdown to take the lead 14-7. The Chants managed to stop the momentum and score one more time in the half when Dylan Hurlburt found Talan Bruha for 14 yd throw and catch for a touchdown. The defense played great in the first half and held Norfolk Catholic’s offense out of the endzone. The game was tied at the half 14-14. At the beginning of the second half, the Knights capitalized on another Chanticleer special teams miscue and scored a couple plays later on a 1yd touchdown run. The Knights would score again in the quarter to go up by two scores. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 28-14. The Chant offense was unable to score in the 4th quarter and the Knights added a field goal late to put the game away at 31-14. Coach Wells said after the game, “We had a couple of miscues on special teams that stole some momentum from us in the game. We played hard, but we can’t make those kinds of mistakes against a good team like Norfolk Catholic. We were disappointed at the outcome and we will learn a lot from this and continue to get better. ” The Chants will be back at home this week to play another quality opponent, Battle Creek.
