Qualify 6 for State; Wells, Chatfield, Zangger win Events

The Ord High School track and field teams traveled to Albion on Thursday, May 14 for the C-6 District track and field meet hosted by Boone Central.  On a warm and windy day, the Chants were able to qualify six athletes in seven events for the state meet in Omaha.  The top 2 in each individual event and the first place relay team automatically qualify for state along with additional qualifiers.  “We had a very tough district this year with a lot of quality athletes in several events”, Coach Derry Trampe noted.  “Going into the meet I was hoping we would qualify three athletes and then hoped for more.  Our kids competed very well, and we were able to qualify more than we anticipated.  I am very proud of how hard we competed and the effort of all our kids.  It has been a pleasure to coach this team.”  

In the team race the Chanticleer boys finished 7th in the 10-team field with 35 points.  Boone Central won the team title with 91 points while Grand Island Central Catholic was a very close second with 90 points.  St. Paul was right behind GICC with 85 points.  Rounding out the team scoring were Nebraska Christian (6), Centura (51), Ravenna (47), Arcadia-Loup City (30), Cross County (23), and Twin River (15).  The Chanticleer girls finish with 67 points which was good for fourth place in the 10-team field.  St. Paul won a close team race with 105 points while Nebraska Christian finished as runner-up with 99 points.  Rounding out the team scores were Boone Central (84), Grand Island CC (61), Centura (46), Cross County (23), Arcadia-Loup City (21), Ravenna (13), and Twin River (7).

Five girls qualified for the state meet with Leah Zangger leading the way with first place finishes in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.  Zangger won the 100 in a personal best time of 12.36 and then came back with a personal best time of 25.73 to win the 200.  Trinity Chatfield continued her winning ways as she brought home gold in the high jump with a jump of 5’ 3”. Second place finishers that qualified for state included Avery Bruha in the 3200 and Ellie Boettcher in the discus.  Bruha ran a personal best time of 12:58.21 to earn her trip to state while Boettcher tossed a personal best distance in the discus of 116’ 5”.  Addi Blaha qualified for state in the pole vault by clearing the automatic qualifying height of 9’ 8”.  The jump placed her fifth in the event but earned her the right to compete at the state meet.  The 4X800 relay team of McKenna Hernandez, Elle Jess, Daisy Shafer, and Gentry Racek finished second in the event with a time of 10:35.73 to bring home a silver medal.  The 4X400 relay team of Klair DeRiso, Gentry Racek, Elle Jess, and Leah Zangger finished third in a time of 4:17.32.  Lillie Shoemaker finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 35’ 2”.  Earning sixth place medals were Klair DeRiso in the 200 (27.68/27.71), McKenna Hernandez in the 1600 (5:56.43), and the 4X100 relay team of Gentry Racek, Elle Jess, Klair DeRiso, and Leah Zangger (51.57).

Beau Wells was the lone champion and lone state qualifier for the boys as he won the pole vault with a jump of 14’ 0”.  The 4X800 relay team of James Piskorski, Jaxson Sanders, Gavin Whited, and Finn Reilly finished third in a time of 9:01.31.  Beau Wells added a fourth place finish in the 200 with a personal best time of 23.50/23.65.  The 4X100 relay team of Easton Ryschon, Levi Klein, Evan Lane, and Beau Wells also finished 4th in a time of 46.68. Fifth place medals went to Finn Reilly in the 1600 (4:56.11), James Piskorski in the 3200 (11:30.86), Levi Klein in the 110 HH (16.58/15.75 PB), Evan Lane in the triple jump (38’ 0.5”), and the 4X400 relay team of Easton Ryschon, Levi Klein, Jaxon Edghill, and Beau Wells (3:41.34), Evan Lane added a sixth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 19’ 3”.
