The Ord Chanticleers improved to 2-0 on Friday night with a 34-24 win over the O’Neill Eagles in their first road game of the year. Ord got on the board first when Beau Wells scored on a 5-yard touchdown run. O’Neill answered with an 82-yard kickoff return, but the Chanticleers took control in the second quarter. Quarterback Jordan Williams scored on runs of 1 and 9 yards to give Ord a 21-6 halftime advantage. O’Neill cut the lead to 21-12 with a long touchdown run in the third quarter, but Ord responded in the fourth. Wells scored twice more, on runs of 29 and 2 yards, to extend the Chanticleers' lead to 34-12. The Eagles added two late touchdowns to make the final score 34-24.
The Chanticleers controlled much of the game offensively, running 89 plays and finishing with 444 total yards compared to 227 for O’Neill. Ord rushed for 267 yards, threw for 177, and picked up 26 first downs while holding the Eagles to six. Wells led the rushing attack with 150 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. Williams added 85 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries while completing 13 of 21 passes for 177 yards without an interception. Calvin Thomsen contributed 32 yards rushing on seven carries. Knox Nelson led Ord’s receivers with five catches for 92 yards, while Evan Lane had two receptions for 44 yards. Wells caught five passes for 31 yards, and Nolan Woodward added a 10-yard reception.
Defensively, Beau Shafer led the way with four solo tackles and four assists. Woodward recorded three tackles, an assist and a tackle for loss, while Howard Winkelbauer had two tackles and two assists. Wells also added an interception, and Woodward was also 4-for-4 on extra-point attempts,
The road win gives Ord a 2-0 start to the season. The Chanticleers continue to show the ability to control the football and create explosive plays, while also having areas to improve as the season progresses. The Chanticleers will be at home this Friday to play the Valentine Badgers at 7:00 P.M.
