Kearney - The Ord Chanticleers traveled to Kearney on Friday night to take on the Kearney Catholic Stars. In the first quarter, the Chants deferred the toss and decided to play defense first forcing a punt from Kearney Catholic. On the Chants first play, Trent McCain ran the ball for 40 yards, but the play was negated by a holding penalty. The Chants were forced to punt. On the punt Kearney Catholic return man mishandled the ball and Talan Bruha jumped on the ball for the first takeaway of the game. The chants took the ball down the field and scored their first touchdown when Blake Hinrichs connected with Easton Ryschon for a 10-yard pass and score. The chants forced a punt on the next drive and drove the field until they turned it over on an interception. Then Stars would tie the game at 7-7. In typical fashion, the chants responded quickly when Trent McCain dashed up the sideline for a 77-yard touchdown run.  The first quarter ended 14-7. In the second quarter the stars would capitalize on another turnover and score two times in the quarter. The lone score for the Chants came from Blake Hinrichs on a 2-yard run. The half ended in a 21-21 tie. The Chants regrouped at halftime and came out in the second half scoring three touchdowns and shutting out the Star. Trent McCain ran for 32-yard touchdown run, threw a pass to Colton Thompson for 72 yards, and had an interception return for 66 yards. The game ended 41-21. The Chants Coach Wells commented after the game, “We got off to another slow start tonight, too many penalties and turnovers again. Give them credit, they capatalized on their opportunities and we game them life in the first half. We played extremely hard, but we must execute better offensively and defensively. Our offensive and defensive lines played well tonight. It’s time for us to start firing on all cylinders.” The Chanticleers will be at home this week to take on Broken Bow.
